Everyone’s blood has some sugar in it. Your body needs sugar for energy. Your body breaks food down into sugar which it sends it into your blood to be distributed all over your body.
Insulin, a hormone made in the pancreas, helps sugar go from the blood into the cells so it can be used for energy.
In people with type 2 diabetes :
the pancreas doesn’t make enough insulin, the insulin doesn’t work very well, or both. Without insulin, your blood sugar goes up and your cells can’t get the energy they need.
